Literature Text

Trolls (Elasmonopsinae) are large knuckle-walking flightless bats endemic to the tropical, sub-tropical and temperate forests of Antarctica. Trolls are in the same family as Gremlins and share a number of their features, including; long arms and short legs, opposable thumbs, intelligence, stereoscopic vision and an almost simian face. Trolls are less sociable than Gremlins, living in small groups of 4 or 6 adults and their young, and are mainly herbivorous, feeding on leaves, fruit, nuts, roots and tubers and  edible fungi, occasionally eating eggs or scavenging meat from a carcass. Trolls will swallow small stones to aid in the digestion of plant matter and ingest certain rocks to obtain important nutrients from them that are otherwise absent from their diet. Male Trolls have large bulbous noses, much like the Proboscis Monkey of the Holocene, which the use to impress females and intimidate rivals. Females give birth to a single, sometimes two, pups, which she cares for on her own.

Do the females congregate in social units with male and female offspring, but males live alone or in bachelor bands? The matriarch troll carefully assesses males and the best fighters monopolize breeding for a few months until they are defeated by a new male. When rearing young the males are kept away by the females due to their tendency to kill pups who aren't their own to bring their mother's into heat faster.
